The first wooden Church of the Intercession of Our Lady was built around 1677, at the same time with the establishing the local settlement which was one of the several that surrounded the main fortress of the town.
The stone church replaced the original church in 1765. Both the church and the four-level belltower were built in the Baroque style. At present it is the only building in this style in Penza. Over the years the church building was enlarged, several side-chapels, a refectory were added, both the interior and the exterior of the church were refurbished, but in 1930 the church was closed and the buildings were slowly deteriorating until the 1990s, when it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, and the major restoration works began.
Now, after ten years of hard work of rebuilding both the church and the belltower, the Intercession of Our Lady Cathedral is an acting church that receives worshippers.
