The most popular art gallery in Penza is also well-known beyond the borders of the Penza region. The first collection of the gallery was built up in 1892, on the money left in the will of the governor Nikolay Seliverstov, who also funded the establishment of the Art School in Penza (now Savitsky College of Arts). The current collection comprises more than 12,000 pieces and spans the art of the West Europe, Russia, Soviet Russia, Penza artists.
The museum’s permanent collection, located on the first floor of the building, can satisfy the most sophisticated observer. More than a thousand works of art are exhibited in the museum spacious halls. The works of Italian masters (17th - 19th cc) depicting the stories from the Bible and various myths, are of great artistic value and attract a lot of admirers. Flemish and Dutch art of the 17th c is represented by works of Adriaen van Ostade, Meindert Hobbema, Simon Luttichuys, Jan Jansen. The French art of the 17th - 19th cc is represented by Pierre Mignard, Franz Xaver Winterhalter, and the painters of the Barbizon school. A great deal of museum space is given to the Russian Art and the national art movements of the 17th-20th cc. Visitors admire the unparalleled art of famous Russian masters: Fyodor Rokotov, Dmitry Levitsky, Ivan Makarov, Ilya Repin, Ivan Shishkin, Vasily Surikov, Isaak Levitan, Arkhip Kuindzhi, Konstantin Korovin, Mikhail Vrubel.
The Russian avantgarde collection includes the works of Aristarkh Lentulov, Robert Falk, Pyotr Konchalovsky, Natalia Goncharova, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin.
The museum also dedicated several exhibition halls to the lives and works of oustanding artists of the Penza region: Konstantin Savitsky, Ivan Goryushkin-Sorokopudov, Arstarkh Lentulov. These artists and art teachers made a significant contribution into the cultural life of the region.
