A historic two-storey red-brick building houses the exciting collections of this museum. With seven exhibition halls and the total area of 1100 square metres, the museum highlithgts the aspects of the paleonthology and the geology of the region, its nature, environment and wildlife diversity. It also dwells on the history of the city, its life at the turn of the 19th and 20th cc and during the 20th c, the remarkable achievements of those who live or have lived here.
The collections of the museum include more than 130,000 exhibits. The unique library of the museum contains around 50,000 publications, including rare copies of old books and the copies signed by their authors. The museum is a popular place for school trips. Younger children enjoy guided tours in the form of games. The museum also organizes classes in a School of Regional Studies, where the young visitors learn about the region’s history and culture, ethnicities and nationalities inhabiting the region, their everyday life, culture and traditions. Older children enjoy the talks and guided tours related to history, ethnic studies, science and culture of the region, as well as stories of the famous people of the region.
The museum organizes more than 40 temporary exhibitions per year. These are visited by over 100 people annually.
