The museum was opened in March 1977 and is dedicated to the life and works of the Russian writer Aleksandr Malyshkin, a member of the socialist realism movement, known for his stories on provincial life.  Malyshkin came from the family of a well-to-do baker, and was the first in the family to attend secondary school and later the university.
Since its foundation, the museum has grown significantly and includes not only the exhibits related to the writer and his family but to the life of that historical period in general. One of the collections, located in the watchmaker’s house, tells the story of life in the region in the 17th-19th cc. Malyshkins’ family business - bakery - is represented by a big stove. The exhibition in the room where the writer lived as a boy includes photos, period furniture and textbooks. All the exhibits of the Malyshkin family illustrate the actual life of hard-working well-off lower class families of provincial towns. A lot of everyday objects have been carefully preserved by the museum staff: the furniture sets, the wall clock, the display cabinet, and the beautiful samovar (traditional Russian kettle) – the centre of family tea gatherings.
The story of Malyshkins family is typical for the period of radical political and social changes that were happening in the country. In the museum, visitors can also see the works of local artists and craftsment. The local literature club is an organizer of literary evenings, meetings and musical events that take place in the museum.
