The museum is dedicated to the life and works of an influential Russian writer of the 18th c Alexander Radishchev. The museum was opened in 1945 in Ablyazovo (now re-named Radishchevo) - a former family estate of the Ablyazovs and the Radishchevs. The writer spent his childhood years at the family estate and revisited it regularly during his life - in 1772, 1775, 1778, and 1798–1799.
The museum exhibits are housed in the former school building and the family church, which is the only remaining building of the estate. The church was built by the grandfather of the writer - G.A. Ablyazov, and was sanctified in 1736. The family vault of the church contains the remnants of A.N. Radishchev’s parents, brother and a younger son.
The church underwent restoration in 1974–1977 and in 1984. The unique frescoes of the church were carefully restored. Since 1991, the church building is used both as a museum and as a place of worship. In 1990-1993 the family house was rebuilt, in the style of the 18th c landowners’ estates. The museum collections contain the personal belongings of the writer’s relatives, unique copies of books, journals and anthologies of the period, rare issue of Radishchev’s most famous work ‘Journey From Petersburg to Moscow’, documents and images. Each year the museum houses a traditional folk crafts fair.
