‘Penza’ Memorial Complex
Address:Penza, Kirova str .
The earth rampart used to be the only structure in Pena that reminded of the city military importance until in 1980 it was decided to build a complex that recreated the atmosphere of the town-fortress: the timber fence, the signal tower with a bell, and the cannon.
The monument ‘The First Settler’ was also installed as part of the complex. The memorial complex is situated in the area where in 1663 the defense fortress was located.
The sculptural group includes two figures: the man is holding a spear in one hand and his other hand is clutching the handle of the plough, his horse is standing behind him. The symbolism of this group is interpreted as the unity of farming labour and military service that both contribute to the prosperity of the country.
The inscription at the foot of the sculptural group runs ‘In the summer of 7171 - 1663 - it was ruled to build a town on the river Penza’ (the dates are given according to two calendars, the Julian and the Gregorian ones).
The group is erected in a place with the stunning view over the river and the city behind.
