‘Rostok’ (Young Shoot) Monument

The well-recognisable monument, a soaring 25 m obelisk on the ebmankment of the Sura river, is devoted to the strength and toughness of hard-working people. The monument conveys the image of the shoot of a young plant, striving to get to the light and breaking through all the barriers. The monument was installed in 1967, and during its construction the incapsulated note was cemented near the base of the monument. The note contains the message to the descendents and the capsule is instructed to be retrieved after fifty years, that is in 2017. Quickly after its intallation the monument acquired the popular name ‘Rostok’ which later became official.
The creators of the monument are the artist A.A. Oya, the sculptor A.A. Fomin, the architect L.D. Iofan.
